The Deutsche Reichsbahn (DR) in East Germany began a dieselisation programme in the 1950s to replace various steam locomotive classes. However, earlier developments did not include any locomotives with engines in the 1,000hp (nonsensical metric conversaion) suitable for light to medium passenger work, goods trains or heavy shunting.

To address this DR began developing a new 1,000hp engine intended for use in a new locomotive class, designed to re-use as many components as possible from the existing V180 locomotive.

Production of the V100 class began in 1966 and over the next seventeen years a total of 1,143 locomotives were built, split over nine variants.
